Is COVID-19 still concerning?
Should we still be concerned about COVID-19? In short, yes.
The World Health Organization continues to emphasize that "COVID-19 still represents a global health threat" [2]. Despite relaxed reporting requirements in many countries, COVID-19 remains a significant cause of illness and death worldwide. For instance, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in the U.S. reported 3,480 deaths from COVID-19 in the 28 days leading up to 1st September, 2024³.
Similar trends are observed in other countries, including Australia. Additionally, there remains a global risk of more virulent strains emerging, which could further complicate the fight against the virus.
At Topelia, we believe that COVID-19 is just the beginning. The antiviral mechanism of our TPL101 therapy targets viral proteins conserved across a range of viruses. This positions us to explore its effectiveness against infections by other respiratory viruses such as Avian influenza and those from the Flaviviridae family, including Dengue, Zika, and Yellow Fever.
